I. Objectives:

LC: The learners will be able to assume the role of a character as an actor/performance, or production staff (director, choreography, light designer, stage manager)  A10PR-IVh-2

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:

  • Identify the roles in a stage play.
  • Explain how theatrical elements affect the creation and communication of meaning in a theater play/performance.
  • Create appropriate costumes, props, set accessories, improvised lighting, and other décor for Philippine plays.
  • Create/improvise appropriate sound, music, gesture, and movements for a chosen theatrical performance.

A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson:

  • Ask the learners how an original performance can convey a message to the audience.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson:

  • Explain to the learners that in this lesson, they will learn about the roles in a stage production and how theatrical elements affect the creation and communication of meaning in a theater play/performance.

C. Presenting illustrative examples/instances of the lesson:

  • Show a video clip of a stage production and ask the learners to identify the roles of the actors and production staff.

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1:

  • Group activity: Distribute the roles in a play into 5 or more groups. Let the group discover the work of every role. Write your answer on a 1 whole sheet of paper.

E. Discussing new concepts and new skills #2:

  • “Pass the Paper” Activity: Each group will pass their paper to the next group until they will again have their paper at the end.
Materials:
  • Sheets of paper
  • Pens or pencils
Instructions:
  • Divide your learners into small groups.
  • Give each group a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil.
  • Ask each group to write down the name of a role in a stage production on the top of the paper (e.g. Director, Lighting Designer, Sound Designer, Set Designer, Stage Manager, Actor, etc.).
  • Ask each group to write down a brief description of the responsibilities and duties of the role that they have written at the top of the paper.
  • After a few minutes, ask each group to pass their paper to the group next to them.
  • Each group should read the description on the paper that they have just received and add a new role to the top of the paper.
  • The process is repeated until each group has had the opportunity to add to each paper and the original paper is returned to the group that started it.
  • After the activity, ask each group to share the paper they have and discuss the roles and responsibilities involved in a stage production.
  • This activity will help your learners understand the different roles in a stage production and their responsibilities. It will also encourage collaboration and communication among the learners in the group.

F. Developing mastery (guides formative assessment):

  • Team Quiz: Identify the role of production describe in every statement and post your answer on the board using the strip of papers.

G. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson:

  • Ask the learners what are the roles in a stage production and how important each role is.
What are the different roles involved in a stage production, and how important is each role in the overall success of the performance? Give examples of how each role contributes to the success of the play.

H. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living:

  • Identify values which can be a key contributor in a successful performance in relation to the roles in a play. Explain its importance.
