I. Objectives:

LC:  The learners will be able to design with a group the visual components of a school play (stage design, costume, props, etc.) A10PR-IVe-1; Assume the role of a character as an actor/performance, or production staff (director, choreography, light designer, stage manager)

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:

  • Enumerate the roles in a stage play and its works/function.
  • Assume roles in a play, discuss and design the visual components of a school play and contribute to the conceptualization of an original performance.
  • Prepare an outline of a production by completing a table.
  • Identify the things needed to consider and prepare for a stage production.
  • Explain the importance of designing and planning well for the realization of a stage production.
  • Relate the concept and skills learned to practical applications in daily living.

A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson:

  • Ask the students to enumerate the roles in a stage play and its works/function.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson:

  • Ask the students how they would feel to be a part of staging an original play/performance.
  • Ask the students what role they would want to assume in an original performance or stage production and why.

C. Presenting illustrative examples/instances of the lesson:

  • Show examples of different roles in a production and their respective works/functions.
Here are some examples of different roles in a production and their respective works/functions:

  • Playwright/Scriptwriter - writes the script and creates the dialogue and story of the production
  • Director - oversees the entire production and makes creative decisions about how the script is interpreted and how it will be presented on stage
  • Producer - finances the production and is responsible for hiring and managing the production team
  • Stage Manager - responsible for making sure all aspects of the production run smoothly, including coordinating rehearsals and performances, managing the technical crew, and overseeing the backstage area during performances
  • Set Designer - designs and creates the set, including the scenery and props
  • Costume Designer - designs and creates the costumes worn by the actors
  • Lighting Designer - designs the lighting for the production, including the placement and color of the lights
  • Sound Designer - creates and implements the sound effects and music for the production
  • Choreographer - creates and teaches the dance and movement routines for the production
  • Actor - performs on stage and brings the characters to life through their portrayal.
  • These roles and functions may vary depending on the type and size of the production, but they are essential to the success of any theatrical performance.

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1:

  • Assign the students to assume roles in a play and design the visual components of a school play.
  • Let them contribute to the conceptualization of an original performance.

Instructions:
  1. Divide the class into small groups.
  2. Assign each group a different theatrical production to work on.
  3. Have the groups fill in the table by identifying the roles of production and their respective works/functions for their assigned play.
  4. After completing the table, have the groups discuss and identify the things needed to consider and prepare for a stage production, such as:
  • Budget and financing
  • Casting and auditions
  • Rehearsal schedules
  • Technical requirements (lights, sound, etc.)
  • Set and prop construction and maintenance
  • Costume and makeup design and preparation
  • Promotion and marketing of the production
  • Venue and stage preparation and setup
  • Safety and emergency protocols during performances
  • Collaboration and communication among production team members
  1. As a class, discuss the different considerations and preparations needed for a successful stage production, and how each role of production contributes to the overall success of the performance.

  • Assign the students to create a production plan for a school play or an original performance.
